Abstract

As the aging of the population advances, there has been increasing demand for nursing care placing importance on respect for the dignity of the elderly. To examine the most appropriate designs of nursing care uniforms for both people in need of nursing care and care providers, a survey was conducted involving 111 nursing-care-insurance-based facilities in Japan. The results were as follows:

(1) Nursing care uniforms were adopted by 78.2% of the facilities, and 85.2% recognized them as an essential part of the development of attractive care facilities. A combination of a polo shirt and pants was the most common.

(2) In 80.2% of the facilities, nursing care uniforms were adopted while paying attention to the opinions of staff members and materials of uniforms, including their fast-dry property, flexibility, and opacity.

(3) Consideration was given to the colors of uniforms to create images associated with cleanliness and reliability, and help care recipients feel that they are leading a normal life. A large number of facilities chose blue so that care recipients would have a clean impression of nursing care uniforms. Warm and bright colors were also adopted by many facilities.
