Abstract

This research investigated the internet culture of the new middle class in modern China through its production, consumption, diffusion, and regulation within the online information society, influenced by the development of Web 2.0. A cultural perspective framework was applied to explore this question in depth. I chose Douban.com as the research object and analyzed how its technology, law and regulation, industry structure, organizational structure, occupational careers, market changed. Also, I conducted a case study of Douban's movie ranking on how those factors interacted. The results show that digital divide has influenced the form of Internet culture. Also, they demonstrate how artistic culture and commercial culture integrated from separation accompanied with changes of the Internet culture production system. For further research, how the production system influenced the new middle class's identification needs to be considered.
