Protein transport events occurring at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of eukaryotic cells and the cytoplasmic membrane of prokaryotic organisms share many similarities. Resident proteins of both membranes span the lipid bilayer once or several times by a-helical stretches and their integration is usually mediated by uncleaved signal-anchor sequences. Proteins that are translocated across either membrane, collectively also termed secretory proteins, harbour cleavable N-terminal signal sequences. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic signal sequences have the same modular structure and are functionally exchangeable. Integration of membrane proteins and translocation of secretory proteins basically occur at the same sites (pores) within each membrane. In both types of membranes, these pores are c- posed of homologous components forming the Sec translocons. Parts of the Sec trans- cons are found populated by ribosomes, the membrane-bound ribosomes. Bacterial m- brane and eukaryotic secretory proteins are targeted to the Sec translocons by the same molecular mechanism involving signal recognition particle (SRP) and its receptor (SRP - ceptor, SR).
Structure and assembly of the SRP The functional core of SRP The functional core of this ribonucleoprotein complex consists of the signal sequence binding subunit (SRP54 in eukaryotes and Ffh in prokaryotes) and the SRP RNA molecule (see Fig. 1). This core is conserved in all organisms, with the intriguing exception of chloroplasts, where the SRP lacks the RNA subunit.

Ligand-gated ion channels mediate fast synaptic transmission in the central nervous s- tem (CNS) and at ganglionic and neuromuscular synapses. The nicotinic acetylcholine - ceptor (nAChR) is a member of the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily, which includes the 5-HT , glycine and GABA type A and C receptors. These receptors are known as Cys- 3 loop receptors, as all of them have a conserved sequence containing a pair of cysteines separated by 13 residues and linked by a disulfide bridge. nAChRs can be divided into two groups: muscle receptors, which are found at the skeletal neuromuscular junction where they mediate neuromuscular transmission, and neuronal receptors, which are found throughout the peripheral and central nervous system. Many of the early studies carried out on the subunit composition and structure of the nAChRs were performed on receptors isolated from the electric organ of Torpedo californica, as this tissue is very rich in nAChRs, and they were found to have a high degree of homology with the embryonic v- tebrate muscle type receptor. Muscle nAChRs are made up of five subunits arranged around a central pore (Fig. 1A, B).
In Torpedo electric organ and vertebrate fetal muscle, the subunit composition is (a1) b1gd, and in adult muscle the g subunit is replaced by the e to give an (a1)b1ed 2 2 composition (Mishina et al. 1986).

The eukaryotic translation machinery must recognize the site on a messenger RNA (mRNA) where decoding should begin and where it should end. The selection of the translation start site is generally given by the ?rst AUG codon encoding the amino acid methionine. D- ing initiation soluble translation initiation factors (eukaryotic translation initiation factors [eIFs] in eukaryotes and prokaryotic translation initiation factors [IFs] in prokaryotes) bind the mRNA, deliver the initiator Met-tRNA, and assemble to form a complete 80S ribosome from the 40S and 60S subunits. By progressing along the mRNA in the 5 -to-3 direction the ribosome decodes the information and translates it into the polypeptide chain. During this process, repeated delivery of amino-acyl tRNA (aa-tRNA) to the ribosome, peptide bond formation, movement of the mRNA, and the growing peptidyl-tRNA is mediated by both soluble elongation factors (eukaryotic translation elongation factors [eEFs] in euka- otes and prokaryotic translation elongation factors [EFs] in prokaryotes) and the activity of the ribosome. The ?nal step in the translation process occurs when one of the three t- mination codons occupies the ribosomal A-site.
Translation comes to an end and soluble release factors (eukaryotic translation termination factors [eRFs] in eukaryotes and proka- otic translation termination factors [RFs] in prokaryotes) facilitate hydrolytical release of the polypeptide chain (for recent reviews, see Inge-Vechtomov et al. 2003; Kisselev et al. 2003; Wilson and Nierhaus 2003; Kapp and Lorsch 2004).

Gastric acid plays a primary role in digestion as well as in the sterilization of food and water. Gastric juice contains the most concentrated physiological acid solution (pH~1) as a result + - of H and Cl ion secretion [hydrochloric acid (HCl) production] by parietal cells in the oxyntic mucosa of the stomach. The combined output of the parietal cells leads to the sec- tion of 1-2 l of HCl at a concentration of 150-160 mmol/l into the interior of the stomach. In order to facilitate the production of acid, the parietal cell relies on the generation of a high + concentration of H ions that are transported into the lumen of the gland. This process is fa- + + cilitated by activation of the gastric H ,K -ATPase, which translocates to the apical pole of + - the parietal cell. K as well as ATP hydrolysis and Cl all play critical roles in the activation + + of gastric H ,K -ATPase and are essential for the functioning of the enzyme (Reenstra and Forte 1990). This review will examine the classical proteins that have been linked to acid secretion as well as some recently identi?ed proteins that may modulate gastric acid secretion, in - dition we discuss the known secretagogues, and their receptors including a new receptor, which upon stimulation can lead to acid secretion.

The first review presents an overview of growth control, transformation and some peculiarities of lipid metabolism. Transcription factor encoding oncogenes are described. Other contributors deal with DNA damage-induced gene expression in relation to signal transduction and growth factor signalling. Phospholipases C and D and their roles in mitogenic signal transduction are discussed. An interesting issue is the involvement of serine and threonine kinases in the propagation of the early mitogenic response. An overview of lysophosphatidatic acid and its growth factor-like characteristic is offered. Growth factors may activate a Na+/H+ exchanger and/or may influence intracellular Ca2+ level. Finally, calcium signals are reviewed.
