Description

A book intended for ecologists, soil scientists, plant microbiologists, botanists, entomologists and libraries. Volume 21 of this series contains five papers dealing with a wide range of plant, animal and soil biological topics. Gray and his colleagues describe the origin and spread of the salt marsh grass "Spartina Anglica". The result of hybridization at the close of the last century, this genetically uniform species has been extremely successful in its particular niche and has a fascinating biology. Smith stresses the importance of gene-environment interactions in life-history theory in contrast to the resource constraint emphasis of the optimization appraoch. Experimental approaches to the subject are also discussed. Chanway and his colleagues examine the evidence for the importance of interactions between plant and micro-organisms in the rhizosphere in determining the outcome of plant competition and the establishment of community structure. Despite scarce evidence, real effects meriting further research do seem to exist. Brundrett also deals with an aspect of ecology in the soil. Most plants seem to have mycorrhizal associates and their importance is now widely appreciated. Much has been learned but more research is needed to determine the beneficial or after effects of mycorrhizae in natural systems. Richter and Baber review the diversity of tropical soils. They are in fact much more variable than is often thought, perhaps because too few ecologists are specialsts in soils. Clearly, a proper knowledge and understanding of the many soil types is vital to conservation and development work in the tropics.

Description

The concepts and concerns regarding the global effects of a continued increase in the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases have enjoyed a high visibility in newspapers and scientific journals. This concern is now being translated into big-science projects. These international projects aim to understand better the processes of climate and ecosystem changes and impacts and are being designed under the aegis of the World Climate Research Programme and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme. Biological and climatic systems are intertwined in processes leading to impacts and feedbacks and so it has emerged that climatologists, atmospheric scientists, terrestrial and marine ecologists must collaborate in research programmes, else the bases of their future projections are incomplete. This special volume of "Advances in ecological research" brings together eight papers which propose and demonstrate the two major components of current climate change research, future prediction and interdisciplinary approach.

Table of Contents

  • The climatic response to greenhouse gases, S.H. Schneider
  • the development of regional climate scenarios and the ecological impact of greenhouse gas warming, G.M. Goodess and J.P. Palutikof
  • the potential effect of climate change on agriculture and land use, M.L. Parry
  • modelling the potential response of vegetation to global climate change, T.M. Smith et al
  • effects of climatic change on the population dynamics of crop pests, M.E. Cammell and J.D. Knight
  • responses of soil climate to change, J.M. Anderson
  • predicting the responses of the coastal zone to global change, P.M. Holligan and W.A. Reiners
  • the past as a key to the future - the use of paleoenvironmental understanding to predict the effects of man on the biosphere, J.M. Adams and F.I. Woodward.

Description

Temperature and other climate variables are currently changing at a dramatic rate. As observations have shown, these climatic changes have serious consequences for all organisms and their ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Birds are excellent model organisms, with a very active metabolism, they are highly sensitive to environmental changes and as highly mobile creatures they are also extremely reactive. Birds and Climate Change discusses our current knowledge of observed changes and provides guidelines for studies in the years to come so we can document and understand how patterns of changing weather conditions may affect birds.

Table of Contents

Introduction Arrival and departure dates Migrators fuelling and global climate change Using large scale data from ringed birds for the investigation of effects of climate change on migrating birds: pitfalls and prospects Breeding dates and reproductive performance Global climate change leads to mistimed avian reproduction Analysis and interpretation of long-term studies investigating responses to climate change Photoperiodic response and the adaptability of avian life cycles to environmental change Microevolutionary response to climatic change Climate influences on avian population dynamics Importance of climatic change for the ranges, communities and conservation of birds The challenge of future research on climate change and avian biology

Description

The most recent volume of this series, Advances in Ecological Research, demonstrates a captivating knowledge of recent advances in the analysis of food webs. A food web describes the network of predator-prey interactions within a community. The simplest description of a food web specifies only who eats whom (a connectance web), with no indication of how much or how often. Chapters in this book begin with a discussion of the most detailed connectance webs ever compiled, and advance to incorporate information on the body size and numerical abundance of the species. The results yield new ways of describing food webs and powerful new models for estimating patterns of energy flow in ecosystems.

Table of Contents

Food webs, body size and species abundance in ecological community description Quantification and resolution of a complex, size-structured food web Estimating relative energy fluxes using the food web, species abundance, and body size

Description

Litter Decomposition describes one of the most important processes in the biosphere - the decay of organic matter. It focuses on the decomposition process of foliar litter in the terrestrial systems of boreal and temperate forests due to the greater amount of data from those biomes. The availability of several long-term studies from these forest types allows a more in-depth approach to the later stages of decomposition and humus formation. Differences between the decay of woody matter and foliar litter is discussed in detail and a different pattern for decomposition is introduced. While teachers and students in more general subjects will find the most basic information on decomposition processes in this book, scientists and graduate students working on decomposition processes will be entirely satisfied with the more detailed information and the overview of the latest publications on the topic as well as the methodological chapter where practical information on methods useful in decomposition studies can be found. Abundant data sets will serve as an excellent aid in teaching process and will be also of interest to researchers specializing in this field as no thorough database exists at the moment.

Table of Contents

1. Introduction 2. Litter fall 3. Decomposers: soil microorganisms and animals 4. Changes in substrate composition and rate-regulating factors during decomposition 5. Nitrogen dynamics in decomposing litter 6. Origin and structure of secondary organic matter and sequestration of C 7. Climatic and geographic patterns in decomposition 8. Anthropogenic impacts on litter decomposition and soil organic matter 9. Methods in studies of organic matter decay References

Nowhere are floods more paradoxical than in the generally arid Australian continent. Floods in an Arid Continent brings together experts in meteorology, hydrology, limnology, ornithology, landscape ecology, veterinary and medical sciences, economics, anthropology and sociology to synthesize current knowledge on floods, their occurrence, and their consequences for the environment and societies in the Australian context. Floods can have either beneficial or detrimental effects on the landscape and human societies. This book fills this important gap in our study and offers a multidisciplinary approach in understanding the effects of global climate change. The editors provide complete coverage on dynamics, patterns and consequences of floods, studied from several perspectives. Although the geographic focus of the book is Australia, the synthesis that is detailed in this book will undoubtedly be useful for the understanding of floods in all other regions of the planet.
