Peter Fletcher argues the case for teaching music historical styles, music theory, and analysis, and stresses the importance of participation in the performance and composition of music. The author discusses objectives and methods relating to classroom and instrumental teaching; running youth orchestras; teaching ethnic, vocal, and popular music; and presenting live music to children. Issues facing educators and musicians today, include coping with scarce resources while trying to meet essential priorities.
