This book focuses upon the structure and work of international institutions in a range of areas that are specific to the present day. Part 1 is an account of the basic functions and the emergence of international institutions, together with a discussion of the role of Secretariats. In the second and main part of the book a range of authors examine the work of institutions in particular empirical areas. It provides a guide to the problems of maintaining international peace and security, ways of coping with disaster, approaches to human rights and the development of the poorer countries of the world.
