This book describes the clinical and physiological aspects of respiratory disorders which are due to neurological and skeletal conditions. It also describes the treatment methods available. The book aims to provide a comprehensive and integrated view of these diverse disorders and to evaluate modern methods of treatment. The conclusion reached is that respiratory complications of the disorders are more important and more treatable than is commonly recognized. Key features include a comprehensive account of each of the conditions and an account of the modern views of sleep apnoea and the importance of muscle fatigue. A description of the most recent developments in treatment is given - particularly diaphragm pacing, nasal positive airway pressure and negative pressure ventilation using cuirasses. The book offers practical help in this complex area as well as describing the theoretical background and emphasizing the physiological as well as the clinical aspects, and should appeal to qualified practitioners dealing with the emergency wards and ITU units, anaesthetists, neurologists, and those physicians specializing in respiratory disorders and chest medicine.
