Interest in student retention is strong and steadily increasing. Research on effective strategies has proliferated, and evidence is mounting that persistence in college is a by-product of excellence in education. A consortium of twelve schools from the mid-Atlantic region was launched in fall 1984. The consortuim schools discovered certain features that are good for retention rates. Moreover, they have proved to be congruent with sound educational goals, programs, and practices. The purpose of this volume of New Directions for Higher Education is to provide college administrators with fresh, timely, and realistic information about the systematic eforts of a group of insitutions to improve their retention rates while retaining high standards of education. In fact, the two processes may be mutually reinforcing. This is the 60th issue of New Directions for Higher Education.
