First published in 1934, these two volumes of essays were intended to provide the background of ideas and habits, the sights and sounds of early Victorian England. Illustrations which accompany the text have been taken from contemporary photographs, paintings, periodicals and engravings depicting the daily lives and material possessions of the Victorians as well as their ships, battles, estates, slums and fasionable ideals.
