Description and Table of Contents

Description

The short stories in this collection first appeared in 1851-9 and all reflect Mrs Gaskell's response to the confusion and distress caused by intolerance and lack of understanding. With the exception of "Mr Harrison's Confessions", the stories first appeared in volume form in "Round the Sofa". Edgar Wright is also the editor of Mrs Gaskell's "Mary Barton" in the World's classics series.
