Description and Table of Contents
Description
In "The Warsaw Pact" Gerard Holden examines the military and political functioning of the Warsaw Treaty Organization (WTO) as a major factor in European bloc politics and an important element in Soviet security policy. Setting the development of the WTO against the background of cold war history, the author traces the growth and functioning of the alliance's institutions in succeeding periods of East-West and East-East relations. Western debates over Soviet policy are reviewed in relation to Soviet military strategy in Europe and recent developments in Soviet arms control and disarmament policy are assessed, with particular emphasis on the sources of Mikhail Gorbachev's current diplomatic endeavour in this area.
