内容説明
The debate about the respective merits of standard and non-standard English has intensified in recent years. This book argues that regional dialects and language variations are not inferior to standard English and, indeed, have a richness and appropriateness of their own. The first part of the book discusses the literary used of non-conformist English, concentrating on the deliberate rejection of the "prestige" English dialect in the poetry of William Barnes, Alfred Tennyson, Tom Leonard and Thomas Hardy. The second part discusses the creative non-literary use of non-conformist English with special reference to gender and language difference and therapeutic conversation.
