内容説明
"Parsing and Interpretation" considers a range of topics concerned with surface structure, parsing and sentence interpretation. The chapters cover both theoretical and methodological aspects of the research in this area. Topics include the processing of local syntactic ambiguity, with extensive discussion of the arguments both for and against the existence of purely structural parsing strategies. Also included is some of the debate concerning the methodological basis of the claims being made in this area. The role of subcategorization information, and the time-course of its influence during parsing is considered, as well as the role of thematic information. This latter topic is also considered from the perspective of Parallel Distributed Processing systems, and the computational architectures which might be suited to modelling the empirical data.
A number of chapters deal with various aspects of noun phrase interpretation, ranging from extensive review of the studies dealing with the processing of empty categories (or "filler-gap dependencies), to questions concerned with the immediacy of anaphoric processing, and the relationship between this and the on-line construction of discourse-models. This collection will be of interest to researchers and students who are concerned with the psychology of sentence processing.
