Description and Table of Contents

Description

The Earth's atmosphere and oceans combine to form a large and complex dynamical system that is only just beginning to be understood. One of the most promising ways forward is to construct realistic numerical models of this coupled system in such a way that they include the effects of ice as well. The inspiration behind this Royal Society Discussion Meeting, held in December 1988, originated with a desire to answer several fundamental questions. How is our climate maintained?, why does it vary, and what influence does human activity have on climate. The papers in this volume describe recent work on regional models, mainly of the equatorial and tropical Pacific, on global models and on the incorporation of air-sea transfers of heat, water and momentum.
