内容説明

Since its headline-making debut in 1990, the Human Development Report has become an essential resource for development specialists, economists, and political scientists around the world. The 1991 report not only updates the findings of the original volume but also examines actual efforts to foster a relationship between economic growth and human development, focusing on the availability of resources for human development. The Human Development Report 1991 begins by examining new data on the levels and distribution of human development. Presenting new methods of measurement that make human development more observable, quantifiable, and amenable to policy planning and intervention, the 1991 report explores the issue of resources for human development: the level and structure of total spending on human development; efficiency and effectiveness of resource utilization; and existing opportunities for improved resource mobilization. In addition, the report reviews the role of the state in financing human development over the last twenty years--the priorities given to human development, the progressivity of fiscal policy, and the efficiency of centralized or decentralized fiscal systems. A special annex of tables for more than 125 countries presents for the first time the total picture of human development financing. Concluding with analyses of proposed reforms and policies for improving the resource availability for human development, the Human Development Report 1991 will be an essential resource for courses in development studies, economics, and political science.

内容説明

An update of the Human Development Indicators comparing human development in most countries of the world and the data tables on all aspects of human development. It describes the historical evolution of the human development paradigm and examines the trends in economic growth and human development from a larger canvas, ultimately showing their impact on people. The focus of this edition is on the link betwen economic growth and huamn development. It maintains that the link is not automatic but can be established through proper policy management, arguing the case for initiating and accelerating economic growth in different parts of the world. The report also maintains that the quality of growth is as important as its quantity; otherwise, growth can be jobless, voiceless, ruthless, rootless and futureless. It identifies employment as an important instrument in translating the benefits of economic growth into peoples lives. According to the report, the world has become more polarized since more than a billion people are enjoying more that a 5% per capita income growth, while there are nearly a billion people suffering from negative growth. The report ranks 174 countries according to the Human Development Index (HDI). It also gives the global ranking of more than 100 countires in terms of Gender-Related Development Index (GDI) and the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM). New to this edition is the Capability Poverty Measure (CPM) which is used as an alternative to the traditional income poverty measure. The report concludes that the future challenge is how to forge and sustain the desired kind of linkage between economic growth and human development.

The Human Development Report, now in its seventh edition, updates the unique Human Development Indicators comparing human development in most countries of the world, and the data tables on all aspects of human development. It describes the historical evolution of the human development paradigm, and examines the trends in economic growth and human development from a larger canvas, ultimately showing their impact on people. The special focus of this edition is on the important link between economic growth and human development. The Report maintains that the link is not automatic but can be established through proper policy management, arguing the case for initiating and accelerating economic growth and at the same time accelerating and sustaining human development in different parts of the world. The Report also maintains that the quality of growth is as important as its quantity; otherwise, growth can be jobless, voiceless, ruthless, rootless, and futureless. It identifies employment as an important instrument in translating the benefits of economic growth into peoples lives. According to the Report, the world has become polarized since more than a billion people are enjoying a more than 5 per cent per capita income growth, while there are nearly a billion people suffering from negative growth. The Report ranks 174 countries according to the Human Development Index (HDI). It also gives the global ranking of more than 100 countries in terms of Gender-Related Development Index (GDI) and the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM). The first index represents HDI, taking into account gender inequality in capabilities, and the second represents female opportunities in selected economic and political areas. New to this edition is the Capability Poverty Measure (CPM), which is used as an alternative to the traditional income poverty measure. The Report concludes that the future challenge is how to forge and sustain the desired kind of linkage between economic growth and human development in a globalized world which represents both opportunities and threats for the nations of the world.

Characterized by shrinking time, shrinking space and disappearing borders, globalization offers unique opportunities for human progress. But these opportunities are not evenly distributed among people and nations. Furthermore, globalization squeezes a number of activities falling outside of the market. "Human Development Report 1999" offers analysis of the economic, social, and political outcomes of this present era of globalization, with a spotlight on the fiscal squeeze on social spending, the time squeeze on caring activities, and the incentives squeeze on the environment. It also offers recommendations for stronger governance - at the local, national, regional, and global levels - to make globalization work for people, not just for profits.

The 11th volume in the series, this work provides an analysis of two interrelated and intertwined issues. Human rights and human development are mutually reinforcing and culminate in enlarged human freedom. The report traces the history of the struggle for human rights as a common human experience and outlines the new frontier of the rights agenda for the 21st century. It demonstrates the ways in which human rights enrich human development goals; adding moral force and ideas of claims, duties and obligations. Human development, in turn, brings a dynamic long-term perspective to human rights and adds more concrete analysis - quantification - and must consider the human rights impacts of policy choices. The report analyzes how human rights must be respected, protected and promoted in the development process.

内容説明

The eleventh edition in the series, the "Human Development Report 2000: Human Development and Human Rights" provides a thought provoking analysis of these two interrelated and intertwined issues. Human rights and human development are mutually reinforcing and culminate in enlarged human freedom. The Report traces the history of struggle for human rights as a common human experience and outlines the new frontier of the rights agenda for the 21st Century. "HDR 2000" demonstrates the ways in which human rights enrich human development goals: adding moral force and ideas of claims, duties and obligations. Human development, in turn, brings a dynamic long-term perspective to human rights and adds more concrete analysis, quantification, and must consider the human rights impacts of policy choices. The Report analyses how human rights must be respected, protected and promoted in the development process. To that end, it addresses the accountability of governments to fulfill their duties, and provides a timely analysis of the duties and obligations of newer actors in the fields of human rights and human development such as corporations, NGOs, individuals, the international community and markets. Of particular importance is consideration of how the current global economic rules and institutions address human rights issues. The Report proposes strategies for promoting development that also protect and further human rights, with significant implications for a pro-human rights approach to development. "HDR 2000" includes and updates the widely respected Human Development Indicators that compare the relative levels of human development in most countries of the world, and presents data tables on all aspects of human development.
