Description

The theory of "word grammar" presents an original view of linguistic structure which has far reaching implications for the study of mind language. This book is both an account of the theory in its most developed form, and an exemplification of it, setting out in some detail a "word grammar" of English constructions. "Word grammar" rests on two controversial claims. First, it holds that linguistic knowledge is a special case of general knowledge and as such is not the function of a unique module of the mind. In developing this view, the author locates "word grammar" in a general theory of propositional knowledge. He show how prototype effects result from default inheritance and develops a detailed account of default inheritance which has been implemented computationally. He goes on to discuss how the analytical categories of morphology, syntax and semantics can be embedded in a more general theory of knowledge. The second central claim of "word grammar" is that only single words should be recognized as grammatical units, so that constituent structure may be reserved only for use in co-ordinate structures. The author develops this new version of dependency structure in a detailed grammar of English constructions including passives, extraction, co-ordination and gapping.
