More than 147,000 couples were divorced in 1983 compared with just 24 in 1858, the first year divorce was granted in civil courts. In 1841, 98% of marriages were solemnized with a religious ceremony and 2% with a civil ceremony, ocmpared with 51% and 49% in 1983. These are two of the statistics revealed in this report compiled from details of marriages registered in England and Wales during the period 1837 (when the present national registration system was introduced) up to 1983, and from divorces granted granted from 1858 to 1983. This volume gives tabular information on marriage and remarriage, showing age, sex, marital condition, type of marriage and seasonality of marriage. The divorce statistics deal with duration of marriage and children of divorced couples in addition to age, sex and previous marital condition. A section on recent deaths giving figures on new widows and widowers is also included.
