Description

A multi-disciplinary examination of the modern political history, economic system and social institutions of Czechoslovakia, this study evaluates the successes and failures of the Marxist regime, and concludes with analysis of the reasons for, and events since, its collapse in 1989. Though originally planned as part of the "Marxist Regimes" series, this book has been extensively revised and expanded to cover the emerging democracy of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic. It examines the difficult process of attempting to overcome the legacy of forty years of communist rule, and assesses the developments in areas of politics, economics, social structure and selected policy areas in the first year and a half of the post-communist period.
