The economic framework of political change is increasingly seen as a crucial factor in determining the recent pattern of German history. However, the core area of economic history has been strangely neglected in terms of recent English language publications on Germany. This book provides a much-needed insight into recent research in the field of modern German economic history. It brings together nine essays which address a number of central issues relating to the nature of German industrialization: the role of foreign competition in fostering technological change; the importance of market integration for economic development; the response by German banks to industrialization; the effectiveness of the market in meeting unprecedented need for urban housing; and the political framework for economic growth in relation to the development of the electricity and chemical industries as well as the post-1945 reconstruction problems in the Ruhr coal mining industry. The book also provides an important counterweight argument to the traditional paradigm of German industrialization in terms of the economic impact of the customs union (Zollverein) and the putative role of the pig-iron industry. This book should be of interest to students and lecturers in European economic history.
