The increasing awareness of the use of performance enhancing drugs in competitive athletics prompted the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Commission on Toxicology to arrange an international conference devoted to analytic and clinical aspects of this problem. Although a few laboratories around the world, under the International Olympic Committee accreditation, had considerable expertise in testing for doping agents, the testing procedures were not widely available to the scientific community.
