This book provides an opportunity for the workers in the field to update their information and gain a sense of the possibilities and directions for the field. Brain stimulation is an area with strong historical precedents in the use of electrical stimulation for cortical mapping. The non-invasive ability to stimulate the brain is new, and the number of areas in which magnetic stimulation can impact is clearly diverse. These facts, and issues of safety and indications are highlighted, along with other papers on the basic mechanisms and pathways activated, the role of the corticospinal system as opposed to nonpyramidal pathways and the depth of activation. The book provides detail on the role of facilitation, potentially providing new anatomical tests to evaluate the nervous system as it functions.
