Description
This work aims to assess and quantify the impact of US air carrier network changes over the last 20 years, develop an economic model of airline firms, taking account of the role of network structure and organization, and test the model empirically, using it to assess the efficiency of domestic routes. Statistical measures such as the Gini Index and entropy measure are employed to assess changes in US carrier networks from 1969-1988. The economic model of the airline firm incorporates gravity model estimates of potential air traffic flows on each route as a "network variable". By specifying a spatial autoregressive form for the model, the interdependence of each route (and the indirect/connecting passenger potential) was included. the model was tested against route data from Continental Airlines, 1987-1988.
