内容説明

There are a number of core issues related to the mental health of women that suggest the need for a specialty in counselling and therapy with women. Among these issues are the special problems that women bring into the therapeutic setting, sex-role socialization in the development of women, the inadequacies of contemporary theory, research, and practice to address the lives of women, and the development of alternative approaches to conceptualization and intervention with women. The application of feminist principles to counselling and psychotherapy with women requires additional integration of theory with practice. Finally, important topics such as diagnosis and assessment, ethical practices in counselling with women, research applications, and the training of counsellors and psychotherapists require consideration. This book addresses core issues in counselling women within the context of two major theoretical positions and a sample of client concerns. The book will be useful both to beginning graduate students who desire an introduction to counselling women, as well as to more advanced and professional clinicians. Advanced professionals may want to discover and integrate these emerging approaches into their therapeutic repertoire, or may selectively adapt text materials for workshops and continuing education training. Each chapter contains a self-assessment pretest on knowledge or attitudes, and suggestions for further reading.

内容説明

Addressing core issues in the counselling and therapy of women, this study presents an empowerment model which examines the different sources of women's psychological distress and well-being. This model is systematically applied throughout the book to conceptualization, assessment and clinical practice with a range of problems. The underlying theme of the text is that the effective counselling of women requires that therapists have an awareness of personal stereotypes, an understanding of self in relation to women in contemporary society, and a sensitivity to the dual impact of sex-role socialization and institutionalized sexism on women's development.
