内容説明

Published collections of case studies of engineering and industrial failures are scarce resulting in very few books being available on this topic despite their obvious value to the understanding of the reasons for failure, and in the prevention of future failures. The purpose of this book is to fill the gap in the literature on this subject. The approach adopted is a generic one applicable to non-ferrous metals and plastics in addition to steels. The book is based on 40 typical failures.

目次

  • Strength of materials and kinds for failure
  • procedure of failure analysis
  • initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks
  • analysis for failure cases
  • failure of crane head sheave hanger
  • failure of wire rope
  • failure of transmission shaft
  • failure of crank of overcurrent breaker
  • failure of discharge wires of electro-static space cleaner
  • failure of fastening screws (fatigue failure)
  • environmental failure of fastening screws
  • failure of gears
  • failure of piping valves
  • failure of line pipe before service
  • failures starting from welds in machines and equipment
  • failure in rolls
  • failures in rail joints. Appendixes: conversion table for units
  • models of fatigue crack propagation
  • notch factors for various kinds of rod specimen
  • typical fracture surfaces observed by SEM.
