Description and Table of Contents

Description

In this volume, four leading US and Japanese scholars examine possibilities and recommend policies to aid the United States and Japan in their economic relations with each other as well as with other trading partners, old and new, in the Asia Pacific. The paper formed the basis for a year-long study undertaken by the Pacific Forum/CSIS in conjunction with the International Institute for Global Peace in Tokyo. The project was led by former President Jimmy Carter and former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone. Issues explored include the role of the private sector; bilateral interaction in the automobile, commercial aircraft and semiconductor industries; the effects of local economic zones; and US-Japan co-operation and co-ordination of their foreign assistance programs.
