Wallace Stevens has written that we do not live in a place but in a description of a place. Historians and other social scientists help describe America by their choice of subject matter, their selection of what to emphasize, and their perspectives. There is no way to grasp "Modern American Protestantism" without seeing how historians have done the grasping. The selection of articles for this volume shows that Protestantism cannot be understood in isolation: there are essays, for instance, on Catholicism, Mormonism, and other movements which help make up the environment, and one essay introduces Canadian themes. It becomes immediately clear from essays on everything from the science of interpretation to the presence of race that "Protestantism" here means much more than "Protestant Churches".
