内容説明

When Andre Siegfried called Protestantism "America's national religion", he took pains to show that some Protestantisms had more power than others in the shaping of culture. What today is called "mainstream" or "mainline" Protestantism developed ecumenical organizations like the Federal Council of Churches. More conservative or otherwide distinctive groups were seen as "outsiders" or "marginal". The dialectic between these and other kinds of Protestantism provides much of the plot of modern American religion. Southern Baptists, many kinds of Lutherans, and Fundamentalists were among the groups which were sizable but which demand separate treatment by historians. The articles in this issue focus on such movements.
