内容説明

Since Fraser Darling began his classic study in 1934, long term research has turned the red deer population of the Highlands into one of the best known mammal populations in the world. Red Deer in the Highlands synthesizes existing knowledge of the behaviour, ecology and population dynamics of Scottish red deer, incorporating both extensive research on geographical variation in population density throughout Scotland and long-term studies of the ecology of particular populations. Many of the ecological phenomena it describes, including marked differences in ecology between the sexes and in reproductive performance between cohorts, probably occur in other populations of mammals but can rarely be investigated. Written with a minimum of technical jargon, this book is relevant to the management of ungulate populations throughout the wild and will be of interest to students of animal behaviour, population biology and wildlife ecology.
