Description

The phenomenon known as Leao's spreading depression is investigated in this collection of original articles. New ideas about the fundamental mechanisms, which focus on the involvement of polyunsaturated fatty acids and free radicals, are presented. The relationship of spreading depression with clinical entities such as migraine, epilepsy, ischemic and protein-deficiency conditions of the nervous tissue are discussed as well. Studies dealing with the application of non-invasive techniques to monitor the disease are included.

Table of Contents

  • Spreading depression - some reminiscences
  • cortical spreading depression as a migraine mechanism - clinical and experimental aspects
  • GABAergic mechanisms involved in cortical spreading depression in normal and early malnourished rats
  • spreading depression and neuron damage
  • synergetics of spreading depression - re-entry waves and reverberators in the rat brain
  • recent studies on retinal spreading depression
  • magnetic and impedance measurements for the detection of spreading depression at a distance
  • interstitial fluid pH and its changes during spreading depression in isolated chick retina
  • detection of magnetic fields from isolated avian retina during spreading depression
  • thalamic and hippocampal spreading depression - electrophysiological and behavioural evidence.
