内容説明
The feminist movement and the need for women in the workforce have made huge changes in women's lives, and traditional views of the ever-present, self-sacrificing mother are being widely questioned. This book highlights the importance of the modern mother's need to make meaning of motherhood. Based on qualitative, interview-based research with upper middle-class American mothers of toddlers, this book explores how mothers make meaning of motherhood. Focusing on these women's images of motherhood, their desires and experiences, Meryle Mahrer Kaplan's analysis shows - in contrast with current theory - that these women want to resist reproducing the mothering they themselves received. Also, although they present an image of motherhood that is at odds with the traditional view of maternal self-sacrifice, their vision of the "new" mother is of one who has needs but must now take care of herself as well as her child.

内容説明
This book provides a study of first time US Yuppie mothers. These women have all followed careers first and have had their children later, in their thirties. The study reveals the images the mothers have of themselves and the ways they feel about motherhood. "Mothers Images of Themselves" provides original and controversial results, which show that the current theories called upon by psychology and feminism are decidedly lacking.
