Concentrating on the changing nature and function of poetry in France from the High Middle Ages to the present, this work discusses subjects including the frontiers of prose and verse, the question of inspiration and imagination, and the figure of the poet as seer, clown, solitary explorer and educator. The book looks at the ambitions and achievements of poets, from anonymous authors of medieval lives of saints, to the works of contemporaries. All chapters are ordered chronologically and contain discussions of individual poems printed in French and in English translation.
