Cognition, culture and the self are created through co-regulated communication in infancy and adulthood. The author uses a "dynamic systems" approach to the development of human communication, and places emphasis upon pre-verbal communication. This study draws from linguistics, biology, literature, cognitive and neural science, ethology, anthropology and psychology.
