内容説明

This Catalogueis a state-of-knowledge list of the English written between ca. 1150 and 1300, whether later versions of Old English texts or original early Middle English. With over 500 entries relating to manuscripts containing writing in English, it describes in detail literary material, both prose and verse, documentary texts, and glosses. It conveniently draws together an extensive body of information only available up to now in widely scatteredsources. The Catalogue is the first stage in the creation of A Linguistic Atlas of Early Medieval Englishwhich seeks to provide a wide range of new knowledge about the spatial distribution of forms in texts of the period. But its relevance goes far beyond the concerns of the philologist and dialectologist. It is an invaluable reference book to any student of the English language and to medievalists of many different disciplines. It isa major contribution to Middle English scholarship. Dr MARGARET LANGis a Research Fellow in the Institute for Historical Dialectology, School of Scottish Studies, University of Edinburgh.
