Description

The drastically changed climate in which research universities and other institutions of higher education now function has led to grave doubts about how these institutions will operate in the future. In this study scholars address the issue, drawing examples and making recommendations based on their own experience as academic administrators and faculty members. These essays address a variety of concerns including: institutional leadership and governance; competition among institutions and within disciplines; the erosion of public trust; "grade inflation" and the perversion and the academic reward system; the challenge of diversity; federal science policy; increased competition for limited research funds; and the place of teaching within the research university.
