Description

This book chronicles the development and implementation of the Pilot Project on Mosaics Conservation, which was established in 1988 by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Cyprus Department of Antiquities in order to carry out conservation work on a remarkable floor mosaic at Paphos. Historical and iconographic background on the Orpheus mosaic, as well as thorough documentation of the procedures used in its evaluation, detachment, reinstallation, and cleaning are profiled. Especially noteworthy is the clearly illustrated, step-by-step description of the relatively unusual rolling technique used in lifting the mosaic. Environmental monitoring procedures and the development and evaluation of a shelter for the mosaic are also discussed.
