Description and Table of Contents

Description

First published in 1921, this anthology has been instrumental in reviving interest in the 17th-century metaphysical poets and in securing for them the high reputation they now enjoy. Included in this representative selection are love poems, divine poems, elegies, satires, epistles and meditations by over 25 different poets. The poems range from Suckling's impish love songs to Donne's holy sonnets, from Marvell's "The Garden" to George Herbert's "Easter Wings". The texts of the poems have now been fully revised with modern spelling, new notes and an introduction by Alastair Fowler.
