内容説明

This atlas contains detailed maps and cartograms showing the geographical distribution of the many facets of society as revealed by the 1991 Census of Britain. The level of geographical detail revealed, drawn by using local government wards, has not been published to date from any population census. The pattern of the social geography of Britain is further enhanced by using a number of non-census data sources and by showing changes from as far back as 1971, using previous census statistics for small areas. The introduction explains the detailed maps, and the necessity of using population-based cartograms, which transform the shape of the country so that the patterns where most people live (in cities) are made visible nationally. The body of the book consists of maps and cartograms with explanatory text, graphs, diagrams and tables pointing out interesting features and making technical observations. There are 100 double-page spreads with at least two maps made up of a mosaic of over 10,000 areas, each showing local as well as national distributions.
