Description

Post-polio syndrome is a progressive neuromuscular weakening seen with increasing frequency in the ageing survivors of polio. It is a poorly-defined constellation of symptoms, starting with tingling or muscle weakness in the arms/legs and progressing to respiratory muscles, which is often missed in its early form by family practitioners and neurologists who see these patients. This text considers the syndrome and the techniques used in its management. Current methods of respiratory management are detailed, and theories of immunologic aspects are evaluated.
