Putting community care policy into effect presents social and health services managers with tremendous opportunities and challenges and, during the period of implementation and beyond, they will need to use all the tools at their disposal. Among the available resources are the findings of relevant research. This publication aims to draw together and summarize, in an accessible reference format, the findings of the body of research relevant to community care which has been funded by the Department of Health since 1988. Taken together, the studies represent a vast amount of work - an important resource for policy-makers, managers, researchers and practitioners. The arguments developed in the body of the work become clearer when project findings are juxtaposed, and the cumulative effect of some streams of research is revealed.
