The structure of the world's air transport industry has changed dramatically in recent years as it responds to the deregulatory ethos of neo-classical economic ideology, aimed at stimulating more competitive, profitable and privatized airlines. This study examines shifts in the scale of operations in the air transport industry, charts these developments, and seeks to place such changes in their historical context. Structural, political and environmental constraints upon the implementation of a more competitive industry are also examined.
