本書は、筆者が、立正大学文学部史学科で開設している「史料講読」などにおいて、その前半の数時間を用いて講じた内容、すなわち日本古代史や中世史を考えていくため、最低限必要である「史料」のうち、「古文書」「法制史料」「史籍」「日記・記録」について、その読解の方法、すなわち基本的な読み方や直訳的な意味の調べ方について、筆者自身がこれまで行ってきた経験的な学習方法の一端を叙述したものでもある。
