This is the story of the British economy in pictures - graphs, charts and diagrams. Whether that story is about manufacturing output, unemployment, public finances or Britain's performance relative to other countries, this guide should enable the reader to grasp complex and detailed information. Economics is central to an understanding of what modern Britain is "about" and where it is going. Thus its analysis and its insights must be accessible to all. But much of the debate about the economy - between Cabinet ministers, MPs, business lobbies, media pundits, trade unions and the taxpaying public - is often lost in a fog of ignorance about the basic facts. The purpose of this guide is to present these facts in a clear, succinct and universally accessible form. The book draws on statistical data from the Office of National Statistics and from government departments, the Treasury in particular. It also draws on work from leading academic institutions and the City of London investment houses.
