With the world's major religions arranged by section, each of which contains stories and features, maps and illustrations, this book provides readers with a tour of the pilgrim destinations of the world. Detailed accounts of saints and visions include special features on the Crusades, St Helena, St Peter's Basilica in Rome, the Shrine of St James of Compostela, the "Canterbury Tales", the "Bhagavad Gita" and the neolithic world. There are descriptions of what visitors to the sacred sites may expect to find today, including any practical problems or prohibitions such as dress regulations, and insights into the process of planning and undertaking of pilgrimages from early times to the present. The book also explores the reasons for undertaking a pilgrimage, the significance of the journey, possible difficulties and dangers, and the effect on the travellers.
