This volume provides many points of reference for the institutional researcher and planner as postsecondary education plunges into the twenty-first century. No crystal ball has been used to see what lies ahead; rather, experts in a number of areas call upon their knowledge, their experiences, and their gut feelings as they prepare a guide to lead us into the future. The purpose of this sourcebook is to chart some likely or possible ways the world of higher education may evolve in the next ten to fifteen years. Broad scenarios can be ascertained by those who know where to look. This is no attempt to predict the future; rather, the authors use common sense, a modest amount of vision, and even a touch of daring as they describe the higher education world of the next century to today's institutional researchers, planners, and university administrators. This is the 85th issue of the quarterly journal "New Directions for Institutional Research."
