内容説明

"A Compendium of Authentic and Entertaining Voyages" was one of the most popular travel accounts of the late 18th century. Edited by the great 18th-century novelist Tobias Smollett (1721-71), the work is a product of and the fuel for the Enlightenment's obsession with travel and a story of European outreach and empire. Tobias Smollett is best remembered today as a novelist or more broadly as a "traveller-novelist", but this posthumous reputation ignores his prolific work as a reviewer and editor. Amongst Smollett's most distinguished and popular editorial work was the Compendium (1756). The work is reprinted here for the first time since the 18th century in its second edition. Smollett's aim was to make available the primary data for a "world history" and his editorial hand is witnessed throughout the seven-volume work. The work was immensely popular and spawned numerous imitators well into the 19th century. Containing voyages of explorers, including the great explorers - Christopher Columbus, Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh - this illustrated work provides data for historians of empire and exploration, and allows literary scholars easy access to a part of Smollett's oeuvre.
