Description and Table of Contents

Description

Reference literature on education expanded with the introduction of mass schooling in the 19th century. The rapid growth of the teaching profession led to the production of instructional books, both for teacher training courses and for reference in the classroom. Kiddle and Schem's "Cyclopaedia of Education" (1877) was the first such book to appear in the USA and the first to be published in English. It offers a thorough survey of authoritative opinion and an accurate reflection of the range of topics that educators were thinking about at this time. Kiddle and Schem were both born outside the USA: Kiddle in Bath, England, and Schem in Wiedenbruck, Prussia. They met when working together in the administration of New York schools. Their "Cyclopaedia" is not unlike "Appletons' Cyclopaedia of American Biography" (reprinted by Thoemmes Press, 2002) in that it combines huge scope with considerable depth. It contains many short entries on individual schools and colleges not to be found in other reference works, and many essay-length articles on education in particular states and countries, and on educators and their methodologies. The principal contributors are listed at the beginning of Volume One, and Volume Two is rounded off with a full analytical index.
