When crystals grow in a magma chamber, some of the fluids present are often trapped as melt and fluid inclusions. These melt and fluid inclusions provide a sample of the melt and volatile components present in the magma chamber. Studies of these inclusions provide information on the temperature and pressure history of the chamber, as well as the chemical evolution of the magma and related volatiles. This book includes a summary of modern techniques used to study and interpret melt inclusions in volcanic rocks, as well as descriptive studies of specific volcanoes. The various studies document the enormous potential for melt inclusions to provide a window into the dynamics of active magma chambers.
