１８６２年、チャールズ・ワーグマンは「ジャパン・パンチ」の第１号と一緒にやって来た。彼は、金持ち、貧乏人、政治家、宣教師、船乗り、商人たちを諷刺して、この社会を２５年間にわたり楽しませた。彼は、何百人もの人々が来ては去るのを見た。短期間の滞在の者もいれば、帰国するまで長年住んだ者もいたし、また彼自身のように横浜に永住した者もいた。ここで紹介するワーグマンのイラストと短いエッセイを通じて、１９世紀中ごろの横浜外国人居留地での生活を垣間見ることができる。そこが本当にどんなふうだったのかをよく理解してもらうために、Ｍｒ．パンチがガイドとして登場する。Ｍｒ．パンチは、ワーグマンが創作した分身で、２５年間の横浜での生活の重要な部分を占め、生活のあらゆる局面に通じていた。
