Schools and Society, Third Edition is a comprehensive, integrated overview of Sociology of Education geared toward upper-level undergraduate courses in Sociology of Education, Foundations of Education, Social Contexts of Education or related courses taught in Sociology or Education departments. It may be used as a text by itself or as a supplement to another text. The book includes original readings and article excerpts by leaders in field and includes theory, methods, classical and current issues By organizing the book around a theme--the open systems approach--the articles are integrated to give a holistic view of educational systems. The articles are tied together by introductions to each part in the system. Articles have been selected based on the following criteria: 1.) Articles that illustrate a broad range of theoretical perspectives, major concepts, and current issues. 2.) Articles that provide a level of reading and sophistication appropriate to upper-level students. 3.) Articles from a wide range of respected sources. 4.) Inclusion of both classic and contemporary sociologists' work in order to provide an excellent balance.
