In recent years, statistical mechanics has been increasingly recognized as a central domain of mathematics. Major developments include the Schramm - Loewner evolution, which describes two-dimensional phase transitions, random matrix theory, renormalization group theory and the fluctuations of random surfaces described by dimers.
